The C101 Experience: Get Involved
Becoming a C101 School
The PGE Foundation welcomes applications from innovative teachers and schools who want to add a community service learning component in their classrooms. The School Application is available in Portable Document Format (PDF). You will need to have Adobe® Acrobat® Reader to view this document. For instructions on downloading this program, are available on the Adobe Web site.
The C101 application process generally occurs in January-February prior to the beginning of school in the fall. The Foundation notifies applicants of the outcome by May-June. Teachers receive the C101 program manual and training at C101 orientation in September.
Becoming a C101 Sponsor
The PGE Foundation welcomes participation by other foundations and corporate sponsors. Working together, more Oregon students can have this learning opportunity. Generally, each program needs up to $5,000 to be used for student grantmaking. Funding can be sent directly to the participating school or can be coordinated by the PGE Foundation.
Becoming a C101 Volunteer
Those interested in being a C101 volunteer should contact the PGE Foundation.

College students volunteer with Community 101.

- Volunteers must enjoy working with students and teachers in classroom setting.
- C101 volunteers assist a teacher with the implementation of the C101 program in a classroom. This requires understanding of C101 process.
- Volunteers act as liaison between the teacher and the PGE Foundation.
- Individuals work with a selected school for a 8-month timeframe between September and June.
- Volunteers visit classrooms, accompany students on site visits, assist teachers in arranging classroom speakers and professionals throughout the year.
- Volunteers provide progress updates to the PGE Foundation and end-of-year summary.
Nonprofit Organizations
When a C101 class sends a "Request for Proposal," submit the application to the students. A nonprofit may apply to as many C101 groups from which it receives applications. Nonprofits will assist students in understanding about their organization and program; conduct on-site interviews with students, or visit their classes to introduce them to the organization. If successful in grant application, recipient organizations will attend the awards celebration.
