Benefits for Students, Schools, Sponsors and Our Communities

Students deliberate which nonprofit organizations will receive their grant money.
Mission Statement: As the students of Milwaukie High School, we support the issues of Drug & Alcohol Abuse, Teen Pregnancy, Depression and Hunger in our community.

Students

  • Students foster positive change in their schools and communities, learn about social issues close to them, and are empowered as young leaders to take initiative.
  • They learn career-related skills through this powerful service learning experience that connects their classroom learning to the real-life world.
  • Increased self-esteem in students, and in some cases, students find career opportunities.

Schools

  • C101 offers a structured service-learning program teachers can use to close the achievement gap and incorporate civic/community engagement into the curriculum.
  • C101 can be used to help students meet Oregon's requirements for the expanded application for graduation.
  • The program offers teachers an innovative way of working with students by elevating them to the role of a mentor to students who are assuming responsibility for their own learning.
  • Students can award grants (up to $1,000) within their schools.

Sponsors

  • Sponsoring Community 101 leverages contribution dollars twice, by having sponsors' dollars teach students through the process of giving contributions to worthwhile nonprofit organizations and schools.
  • Sponsors are recognized for their values and commitment to the community by developing civic-minded youth.
  • Sponsors gain partnerships with future employees.

Nonprofit Organizations

  • C101 grants provide needed funding for programs.
  • Long-lasting business and personal relationships develop between agencies and students who are future donors, volunteers and employees.
  • Nonprofits gain increased visibility through media releases and connections with other nonprofit organizations.
